My critical teaching manifestos that I have developed throughout my education journey.
What is the purpose of teaching and learning?
To create lifelong learners in all of my students;
To discover students passions, hobbies, and interests and use them for good;
To aid in the learning of others;
To make connections with others;
To grow with others;
To make a positive difference;
To reflect on past experiences;
Learning from our mistakes;
To destroy the negative stereotypes of LGBTQ and POC;
To create an inclusive environment;
To create an open and welcoming environment;
To have tough conversations that lead to critical conversation;
To become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
What Do I Believe Education is for? Being your true authentic self everyday in the classroom is exactly what your students need (Goldberg, 2018, pp. 2). As we move through the years of our education journey, our students and teaching criteria are going to change. One thing we can keep constant is being ourselves and trusting our instincts. Goldberg (2018) states "we must know our strengths so well that we can leverage them and and bring our best, most authentic self to our students" (pp. 5). Being our true self in the classroom everyday will not only benefit us, but our students as well. It sets an example for our students that no matter what challenges arise, we stay true to ourselves and trust our instincts. I want to teach my future students that their true self is their best self. No matter what that may look like. I want to create an environment that is safe and welcoming so that students feel comfortable being themselves. So that they can succeed in their education.
How Will my Pedagogies Embrace Difference? Mypedagogies will embrace difference in creating an environment that welcomes difference. Not fitting into the stereotypical norm of gender, or culture, or anything, is okay. As we move along in our teaching careers, things are going to change. The world changes everyday, we can expect things to stay the same. Because things are always changing, I need to be able to adapt, grow, and learn from the differences. This is the only way I will become a life long learner. Adapting the way I view the world and growing with it will benefit me, and help me teach my students. Every class will be different, every year will be different and that is okay. Every class and every year will be an open door to endless learning opportunities. I am excited to grow in my education career.
